A to B : Frontiers & Movements

Call it “cheap structuralism”, because it is what it is. Or topography.

Here I choose to casually watch two territories, A and B.

It can be two apartments, two countries, but also two states (healthy/sick, or single/in couple), two styles, two blogs, anything by two.

Then you can begin to play :

  • If there’s a A and a B there’s a frontier. What is it made of?
  • Is it a line, like between two countries? Is it a wall? Symbolic?
  • A place (called C) which is a “space between”?
  • Do you have to study or focus on C?
  • Is there a door or many doors? Who opens, closes?
  • A bridge? Who build it?
  • Are A and B bonded? By what?
  • A and B can be different things (a house/outside) or the same nature (two people?)
  • When you have A and now also B, you own both. Kill the frontier, or keep both distinct territories inside you, like two facets? Like the two Germanies?
  • A becomes B is a mutation. Then where’s the border?
  • Rubicon process : once you crossed the border, A doesn’t “exist” for you anymore. Burnt bridge!

The tool is funny to use : determine if your problem can be structured as A and B (Do I have to live in the same place as my lover? Should I merge my two blogs? What is convalescence?).

Drunk texts/Sad texts/Angry texts/Sleepy texts

The idea of texting (which is : “words, on phones, between two persons, in real time”) has some consequences.

Emojis help you to color/read sentences, but not all the time.

Beware of arguments in textings!

Texting contains a whole bag of possible problems.

It’s fast : you write and send, you don’t have the quiet comfort of emails, which you can polish for hours or days before sending.

You miss the context, the sound of voice, the eyes, the gestures.

Emojis are false friends. They indicate when it’s humor, for example, but they don’t say about the subtilities. Is the fun colored by sarcasm? Alcohol? Nonsense?

So, as a reader, you often guess well where’s your conversation partner – “He’s drunk, let’s take this in consideration”, or “it’s 3 AM there, I suppose she’s sleepy”. But sometimes, you don’t, you just DON’T!

Someone’s sad. Or had a drink. Or just learned really bad news (but can’t tell you). Etc.

You just have to guess. Build, in real time, your own dials.

The tools are easy to define :

  • Don’t have long serious conversations in texting, it’s dangerous.
  • If you can’t avoid it, be both aware. Meta-communicate around it.
  • If you have to, or if you have to argue, call. Voice.
  • Don’t forget you don’t have the gesture and the eyes and expression of your friend.
  • Therefore, don’t put the other’s speech in serious boxes. These boxes are probably inaccurate. Or invent them alive, moving, mutating, fragile.
  • Listen to your intelligence and to your guts : If you feel that something is wide of the mark, pay closer attention.
  • Never hesitate to ask details, a time to think, or an explanation.
  • Ask for a change of media : email, voice, real meeting.
  • Meta-Communicate again, if you’re hesitating, ask about the mood of your partner.

Etc. Have a nice day! Follow me!

Fruitful Constraints & Creativity

It’s an old tool many artists know : many constraints are fruitful. Mainly because a constraint is a problem calling for a solution, therefore you have to move, to be creative.

All jobs and activities have constraints : budget, environment, other people, time, space, your skills, your tools.

If it’s too loose, though, you feel a freedom, which can be messy. You can not catch anything. Stuck. You maybe need to tight something up, to find “your” freedom within a new frame.

Brian Eno invent the Oblique Strategies (mainly for musicians) as a card game. You pick a card and you have to obey (sometimes it’s terrible!). Some directors are well known to tell the actors to follow precisely something (the dialogs, or the places they have to move on the set, etc) before shooting. Some digital artists sometimes go out in a park with a pencil and a notebook. A photographer can go outside with the limit of 20 pictures taken, not much. And G. Perec wrote an entire book without the letter “e”.

Constraints are fruitful. You probably have many disposable levers for these. A poet can obey : write something in alexandrine; without any letter “p”, in less than 5 minutes. You may have to present a project in ONE minute only, and… with no words. What are your levers?

You can pull a lever to Zero, it’s the Total Constraint. For example, you’re a photographer and you go out without any camera. Just your eye. You’ll feel the need, you’ll feel your brain simmering. As you can only watch and… think, you’ll maybe have bursts of ideas (instead of taking pictures).

Of course it’s an example of “Amor Fati”, being content with what happens to you, even if it seems bad. Embracing fate : every constraint, if you can’t avoid it, should (and will have to) be danced with.

The Importance of rumunchewminating #Drafts in #WordPress #Blogging

Bonjour !

Someone one day explained me WordPress and its tools (thanks, dear). I needed time to notice, though, that instead of writing my blog ideas on a notebook, I could use the DRAFTS. As I’m writing this, I have… 86 drafts. Sometimes it’s just a Title, sometimes it’s a whole article… without the last sparkle or the binder that would allow me to publish it.

For “Draft”, we say “Brouillon” in French (and oh I already guess this word will be a total mess to pronunce for you), which implies a sheaf of meanings.

A draft is a draft. If a person is muddled, we also say “he is draft” (il est brouillon), which makes sense. You could say this person is drafty, but I just discovered it means “uncomfortably breezy”, how sad. I love your “drafted” or “draftee” words, though. OK.

Drafts are like external little brains or memories. I suggest you read over a few of them, from time to time, putting back some of their seeds in your mind, in a useful Le Corbusier Effect. Your brain will rumunchewminate them like a little cow it is.

Sometimes a draft will stay sleepy for months. One good morning though, you’ll open it, add a paragraph and bingo, idea deedee, une idée ! The whole package disembarks and you can click on “Publish”. How come?

Another day of brain-silence, try this : go down to your last and 110th draft, open it, add something, a word, two lines. If it doesn’t unfold, close it back, that’s all. Next! Make them climb back up!

Have a nice day. Thanks for reading!

Fighting Quotes part 1 : Game for your Mind

It’s a game, an exercise. It’s a tool to think, to invent, to move your mind.

Go on Google Images and type a word, then “quote”. Chose inspiring subjects, like Desire, Love, Inspiration, Flowers, Choice or Change. Voilà. You’ll find plenty of easy quotes. These are the seeds.

I already did this exercise with Nietzsche about music. “Without the music life would be a mistake”, hahaha. This is so… OK, whatever. See my point.

I pick “Desire”. Desire Quote. Or better : “Motivational Quotes”. These are good!

“Desire, the starting point of all achievement”. Well said, buddy! Could be the contrary, the starting point of all failure, no? What to they want us to think?

“There are two ways to get enough. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less”. Hmmmm? What does the author want, again?

OK, let’s go on.

“Believe in yourself”, which is typical stupid “positive” psychology, right? Who will suddenly believe in oneself after reading this?

“A comfort zone : nothing ever grows here”, ah yeah? Why not?

Appreciate these three quotes together :

Tools :

Try to find what does the author want. Try to write the quote-contrary, the opposite view. Try to find the stupidity, and the truth too, in each quote. Try too separate the “idea” in many more concepts (life is always more complicated, blablabla), like an exploding sheaf of ideas. What else?

Shelf for Seeds, a new way to arrange your books

You know that there are entire books about “how to arrange your bookshelves”. Alphabetically, authors’s names, centuries, genres and themes, companies…

I used to casually group things. Books about movies. Pocket books by collection. All books about an author I love (Chekhov, Bernhard, Faulkner or Jünger). Art books. Etc.

As I write this blog, I just had the idea of picking up some books from all these shelves and to regroup them in an empty bookshelf, called : “Books of many Seeds”.

Many books stays out of this, it’s easy : novels, or books digging “one concept”. In fact, only a few books (three shelves by now) are able to live there. They are the “Books of many seeds”. If you need an idea to write an article, just pickchoose one.

Have a nice day !

Dance of the Seeds Providers

Seeds for the mind are the little ideas from which you can grow an entire tree (then a forest, thank you dear). Most of the time, we have our own little box of seeds, or we can grab one or two, sometimes, in a magazine, in a book, in a movie.

But how delicious are the seeds provided deliberately by a friend. Imagine you’re stuck on a work, an article, a musical piece, a drawing. This person begins to ask you about this and that. If he (or she, let’s say she’s a she) is smart, she will dig with you, helping you to find the flaws, the lacking elements, the “it’s too much here”. Patterning.

One can also drop one seed. This external element can wait for a long time (or not), then it grows. It grows well and efficiently because this person is a friend, and knows you. She has this smile. She knows…

There are many ways of giving seeds. It can be very simple, like offering three words to someone who wants to write a short story. Or three pictures ? It can be the muse thing. The way you are or work as inspiration. A field for seeds !

How could I explain the bliss when you have someone in front of you who’s there for that, with a little box of new seeds in his pocket ? “Want one ? What kind ? Why ? Tell me…”

Tool is about this in both directions :

  • Do you NEED a seed ? Who will you ask ? Do you have this kind of friend ?
  • Can you OFFER a seed ? Who needs it ? Are you able to do this ?
