Inner volcanoes/Inner glaciers

I found this little tool in a Walter Murch book (“In the blink of an eye”). Murch is a film editor, a kind of genius – he’s the guy who edited Apocalypse Now. He quotes an Ingmar Bergman paragraph, who explained something about… Igor Stravinsky.

Stravinsky wrote a lot about interpretation, performance.

As he had a volcano inside, he was preaching moderation. And then he couldn’t tame his volcano, and some concerts were… fiery – which was very surprising for his readers!

Murch tells that we seek balance in our lives.

  1. Therefore when we realize we have a volcano somewhere inside us, we try to temper the eruptions!
  2. And the one who has a glacier inside will advise passions unbridling.

The danger, tells Bergman, is to read Stravinsky the wrong way : to moderate the glacier, or to wind up the volcano.

I think of this Polish idiom : “One shouldn’t butter the butter”.

I knowww it’s not a tool, it’s a seed for overthinkers…

When do we have to think this way? What are our volcanoes? What are our glaciers? Do we handle balance? Do we do it the correct way?

Thanks for reading!

Is there a balance between good and bad in one’s life?

My daughter was a bit worried today.

She said to me that her day was too great. “It’s abnormal”, she said : “Something bad will happen – probably.”

Happily we ate good food, made some crepes, and it’s been a really happy day!

We’ve all been there, right? This feeling…

Everything’s fine. Therefore something wrong will happen.

We had a good talk about it. It lead to the idea of an ideal balance in life. Justice.

It’s probably not fair, but there is not (balance). Or justice.

Some days are bad. Some are great! Sometimes we have power on this. Sometimes we have not.

Then you think about another balance : between what you master and what you don’t.

Then you think about Marcus Aurelius, who choose to worry about wh he CAN do. The rest, you have to Amor Fati, “Love what happens”. Acceptance, etc.

This is for masters, right?

You can also pray, or imagine a lucky charm can be useful, but well…

Multiples balances. Decisions and letgoes. Ohlalaaa…

Let’s drown into Royksopp, or open a classic, or have a conversation and split a bottle of wine, OK?

Have a nice day!

Loaf & Book : The Feng Shui of Things

The loaf, on the table, is upside down. Do you turn it up? Yes you do.

The book, on the shelf, is upside down. Do you turn it up? Yes too.

Why?

OK, it’s meant to be on the correct side. And it’s ugly to watch. Or you “feel” the bread and the book despair, you want to save them from uncomfortability.

Feng shui is about “harmonizing everyone with the surrounding environment”. It’s interesting to explore, though I mainly relate to my instinct “does this look right or not?” instead of << rules >>.

Most of the time, the rules of Feng shui corroborate my instinct. For example : when you lie in your bed, ready to sleep, you HAVE to be able to see the door, right? You could say it’s only logical but you know it’s not only logical. You feel it. Like the poor bread loaf, gasping for help like a dying tortoise it is.

  • En aparté, from aside, I would like to tell you something :
  • In French we do not have a word for a loaf (well, there’s a word, une miche (pronounce mish), but we don’t use it), we say “un pain” (a bread).
  • For a slice of bread, we have “une tartine” (say tarteen), but we often say “du pain”.
  • So, well, we miss a loaf word, but you miss a tartine word too. Pffff…
  • Instead of “spreading something of a slice of bread”, we say the verb : tartiner.

Harmony, balance, l’équilibre. It’s probably an old instinct we have, right? Or is it an Interesting Braid between instinct and logic?

Tool : Bwaaah you got it, right? Where will you apply that? Things and places, but also? What could be a Feng shui of poetry? Of photography?
