Towards the Titans

This is a little article about Ernst Jünger’s concept of The Worker.

ONE

In Greek mythology, the Titans descended from primordial deities (Mother Earth and Father Sky) and preceded the twelve Olympians (like Zeus or Poseidon).

TWO

The Worker is a “Type”, like the Warrior, the Scholar or the Priest. Men work with their bare hands, then with tools, then with machines.

With the help of steam, then electricity, these engines became more and more powerful.

THREE

The first consequence of this “progress” is that men are losing contact with the work itself :

  • The baker orders tons of flour and prepares his dough with huge machines.
  • The soldier is in a room, drone-killing men thousand miles away.
  • The sailor is a cargo pilot with computers.

No more sails to use to feel the wind. No more spear and shield to fight an enemy eye-to-eye. No bread to knead any more…

Every gain involves loss

FOUR

The second consequence of this progress is, as the machines become more and more powerful, men become more and more powerful, with almost God’s powers. Atomic bombs look like Zeus’ fury. Emailing a book in Japan takes one second. We use rockets to go to space, we fly in huge planes. It’s… titanesque! Titanic or Herculean, right? These words…

FIVE

The conclusion is in the RMS Titanic boat. Almost 900 feet long, so big and powerful that it was said unsinkable, right?

Jünger says that the Titanic disaster (1600 casualties) is an archetypal warning. The name of the ship, the arrogance of men, the power given by technology, the cut from “reality” and nature, is like a symbol of what happens to men who want to be Titans.

So you trashed everything your ex offered you?

Books & Scarves, hop in the trash!

Some people, after a break up, trash everything – “It comes from my ex”.

Good!

But I’m a constructivist, thus I know things are… “things”, the value is not “into” things.

The value of things is conferred.

By me.

And by the way, this great shirt is just a great shirt.

Err I won’t trash it.

I keep things I like. A good scarf looks good on me, and it’s warm. Period.

If I have to trash my scarf, it seems to mean : “I’m haunted by the past”, right?

“I loved this scarf, but today I’m terrified by it. Kill kill kill!”

I’m not haunted by “the past into a scarf”. The past is always interesting!

And it’s not into a thing.

If someone offered me a book, I will keep it as a good sign. And read it.

Good things stay good things : I just CAN decide it’s this way.

So I keep good things, in some states of mind :

  1. This comes from a good moment, that built me.
  2. I’m not “haunted” by imaginary feelings included in the thing.
  3. It’s useful and I like it.
  4. Dramaqueening is for teens.

“My now bf/gf is bothered by my ex’s things”. What about your body, then?

“What if my ex is now my enemy?”. What? Really? OK then. Trash your shirt. This book too. Voilà. Done. And now? Hmm? Feeling better? Any change? Anywhere?

I have some paintings on my wall which were given to me more than 25 years ago (by an ex). I have so many books. Yes : scarves, pens, a lamp, whatever. My mind-house is built on old stories. I love it!

And it’s a windy winter, brrrr…

The quality of time has been modified

The quality of time has been modified

Like a sudden change in the light

Look around you, now

The present is full of shades

The past resuscitates  – or goes very far

The future is now impossible to measure

When does this happen? Sudden proximity of death? Pregnancy? War? Love? A splendid new idea, a project?

What is lost? Why? Can you do as if nothing happened? Will you live differently? What does it trigger? What is possible? What do you want : use this new light? Find back the old one?

The Future of Transportation : Rent a louteuse!

I posted this article on https://brainsunite.wordpress.com/ – a collaboration based wordpress page I’m proud to work with…

Foresight is a risky field. Writing, in France, in my wobbly English, an article about the future of transportation is even more risky. Donc, well, you go girl! (or boy).

25 years ago I wrote a story where young people used what I called louteuses (could be “looters”) which were flying cameras you could hire for a certain amount of time (in my story it was used to spy people in their homes). Let’s say I invented self-service drones, parked everywhere at the top of buildings, computer piloted.

Drones! I’m proud! But I’m really today not able to imagine the future of transportation, though. Of course, I could watch some levers and pull them. Change of “nature” (teleportation?), or intensity (go “faster”), or go elsewhere (space?) etc. That’s boring, it’s just dial-watching.

I prefer to imagine an oblique way to move for the future : Not moving any more.

Virtuality and powerful computers will allow you to “travel” with 3D-glasses. You probably will be able to walk in every street of the Earth (or the Google Earth, hmm). Ahhh wandering in the suburbs of Yalta in autumn!!

But maybe you need real time?

There will be hundreds of ready-to-use self-services drones EVERYWHERE. They will be clever enough to navigate between your orders and security issues and laws. If you want to fly over Greenland NOW, let’s hire one sponsored-therefore-free drone, put your glasses on, and have fun!

My future of transportation : virtuality.

Of course it is baaaad. Nothing is better than to go “on site”, meet people, see the sky, and feel the air of Delhi. For this : read my colleagues’s articles, OK ?

Thanks for reading, and sorry for my Frenchenglish!
