When your imagined map doesn’t fit with reality…

If you meet someone online, or even if you talk on Skype with a friend you know “in real life” but you never went to his/her home, your brain… works.

Your brain draws a map of this person’s apartment, or house.

According to the informations you have, you can NOT prevent your mind to invent “the other person’s place”. You’ve been there, haven’t you? Well, errr : nope.

You can hold two pictures of a room, or a complete Skype “Hey, do you want to see my place?” wandering : your brain does it : it builds a set of images and a map, it builds the light, the mood, the size of all of it.

Then…

One day you GO there. And this is disturbing. This porch, these lanterns, this mirror, this corridor, this carpet, this bathroom : you were all wrong, right? It’s different.

It clicks. You brain literally swallows the environment. It is trained to do it!

Now, you’re back home. And you have TWO memories of this place. Ah ah! So there!

The place you imagined. And the place you saw for real.

These are two different things!

OK, this makes us think, right? It’s a set of questions…

Our mind is constantly imagining what “will happen”, how this “will be”. Then, in front of reality, it… “fixes” it. It works in real time : if you hear a glass crashing on the floor behind you, your brain draws a whole decor, a scenery of “what I will see when I turn my head”.

What is disillusion?

Can you do that for a whole culture? A whole country?

What can we do, or study, with this knowledge? What if you were writing a movie? What tension could you use? More : what will your brain do with the first, imagined place, once you know pretty well the real one? Is it vanishing? Is it useless to keep it? Why? What if you studied the differences between what you expected and reality? What does it show about your brain?

What if you’re a couple and you both imagined the place you will be for a holiday, from a set of five pictures on the web? Would you talk about it, once you’re on site? I mean… about the differences of… the differences of what you imagined?

OK, I’ll have one more glass of wine before going to bed ūüôā

“You and your books!”, a story of Words & Maps

25 years ago a friend of mine suddenly attacked me with this phrase : “You and your books!” – “Toi et tes livres!”.

It was very clear¬†:¬†I spent too much of my time¬†reading books (instead, probably, of “living my life”, meeting people, thinking by myself, talking to her, who knows?).

I was a bit shocked. I thought about it for a few days then I wrote her a letter (no email, in the eighties). My main idea, in this answer, was that books were not papernothing, but more like a meeting with a person who spent months or even years to elaborate it.

You don’t need to have a Master Degree in Linguistics to know that our link to the world is made of “events, and how we judge them” (past, now or future), and for that purpose, we use… words. At times, I wonder if books were not just a way to draw maps for my life…

Each book can be¬†seen as a possible “conversation” with the author? Or… an inner travel?

“A model is a lie that helps you see the truth” – H. Skipper

“A model is a lie that helps you see the truth” is a quote by Howard Skipper, an American doctor.

Here I try to extend this pattern, replacing “model” by cousin¬†ideas :¬†“pattern”, “structure”, “map”, etc.

So what? A¬†“model” is not the real world, it’s a construction made to¬†help us to¬†understand the real world.

A MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY, right? A map is a LIE, it doesn’t give you changes, colors, moods, light, temperature and life. But it’s a useful, thought, for a purpose…

You can be very serious while modeling things (in Science) and an architect will build models (in cardboard or on computers), but you can also be a little casual “just to see what you’ll see”.

For example you can see each of these things : a school, a couple, or a battle, as : a machine, a living creature, a computer, a kingdom¬†or a business company. If you “apply” your model, you’ll rule out something, but¬†you’ll find interesting things too. Then, trash the model. Because it’s a LIE, of course!

A model is a construction made to help us to understand the real world.

It can be using¬†a structure and also “a way to explain how it works”, moves¬†and¬†evolves. Let’s use the model of “a business company” to study “a married couple”. Who’s the CEO, how does the money flow, what are the goals, etc…

It can be¬†more like a skeleton, a complex map of “what it is”, or a single archetypal word¬†:

  • Mauss studied suicide¬†or gift¬†and made entire books about these. A way to search for “what is common”, the “fundamental characteristics”.
  • Simmel studied the bridge¬†: it links two territories, it is a territory itself, it “shows itself” as a bridge, and it is a “will of connection” (over a river, for example).

Yes, this leads to Archetypes (Jung)

a statement, pattern of behavior, or prototype (model) which other statements, patterns of behavior, and objects copy or emulate

To Forms in philosophy (Plato)

pure forms which embody the fundamental characteristics of a thing in Platonism

and to the most precious diamond : the Symbol.

a symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow people to go beyond what is known or seen by creating linkages between otherwise very different concepts and experiences.

(All quotes from Wikipedia – I bolded some words)

Questions :

Who’s right? Skipper who uses the word¬†“lie”, or Plato and Jung who seem to seek a “pure form”? Is all this a search for a link, common aspects¬†in different things, or are these just tools to explore a concept , moving aside¬†difficulties and details? Are you more interested in¬†details, or structures?¬†Why do we say that there are only a few ways to tell a story (Google : Seven Basic Plots)? What are the “order” games like MBTI, Zodiac or Enneagrams? Is a symbol the tiniest and more radioactive possible model?

Let’s say you’re introvert, fast, jealous, a father, a murderer or a valet. Is it a lie, because it’s true but way too simple (and a label on¬†your face) – then you list the subtilities, the movements, the reasons, etc -, or is it a funny truth which could lead you to make decisions, or find other archetypes to think about?

Yeahh, overthinking, I know…

Digital does not really exist…

Digital does not really exist ?

Yes of course. Most information systèmes are now, from Analog Signals -> Digital Data, digitalised.

In music, movies or art, on peut digitaliser most of the process. Let’s take the example of music on Compact Disc, or in mp3 on your computer. A bunch of zeros and ones, that’s all.

Music is coded in digits. This information goes through processors, an Audio power amplifier, then to loudspeakers, etc… In this chain, digits disappear. Yesss they do ! Loudspeakers do their stuff :

They create soundwaves

No digits anymore : Soundwaves (oh the pretty word) are NOT digital. All this analog-magic flows into your ears (which are not digital either), and finally your ears inform your brain (which digital is not).

Your CD is maybe a DDD, but reality is more DDDAAA, here’s to you. Bim.

What is your side ? 1/ you like LPs because you say the sound is “warmer” ? 2/ you are a high end hi-fi geek, and you like perfection of DDD ?

Tool & Dials :

Music can be coded in zeros and ones, but in the end analog soundwaves dance in the air, your brain activates pleasure, and feelings, and souvenirs. Happily !

The tool says : Breathe ! In the end, you’re always an imperfect guy (or lady). Choose your weapon, warm or perfect. Dial measure is “less or more pleasure”. That’s all what it is. Whatever digital or analog…

What happens on the border ?

What happens on the border ? Que se passe-t-il à la frontière ?

Astronautes et cosmonautes, when they are over our planet Earth, have a SHOCK.

You know what kind of shock ? They watch the Earth and well, they see something. In fact they do not see something :

“Les fronti√®res n’existent pas”

No borders on our planet. No boundaries at all ! They are only in our heads.

Borders are full of questions. What do you find ON the border ? Checkpoints ? Holes ? Paths ? Gates ? Is a border a line, or a geographic large place (say : no man’s land ?) ? If it’s a large border, is it a whole territory ? Is a border closed or opened ?

Can a border separate different nature-of-things ? After all, ice could be the border between air and water ? Are borders imposed ? Moving ? Inherited ?  Natural (river) or built (wall) ? What happens on the border ? Discovery ? Désillusion ?

What happens at the cross of A, B, and C territories ? What are mental borders ? When do we say “Tu vas trop loin” : you go too far ? And what if you cross that border ? Haha ! You’ll see… Tu verras, mon petit.

Tool 1 : It’s always funny to play with a simple concept and to apply what we know to other territories. Where are the borders in the house of a loving couple ? Between an employee and his manager ? What are the way to pass a closed one ? Are there some sp√©cifiques “borders activities” ?

Tool 2 : No boundaries on Earth. These are all given, provided, confered, inside-of-heads things. Apply on some other borders, juste pour s’amuser…
