Instant Oyster or Tent?

There are so many way, for humans, to protect themselves from stress.

Many will fight, “Up and at’em!!”. Others will run away – and that’s often smart!

Most thinkers know that against stress there’s one good solution: flee from the source of stress.

There’s another one: realize that stress does not exist in reality, but only in our brain, that stress does not penetrate your body through an ear or a toe, but that we secrete it.

OK, but now we all know that we sometimes have to deal with it. There’s no way, now, to escape.

Let’s not talk about fighters, we’re all introverts here, right?

To protect me against stressy people or situations, we can also oyster.

An oyster is a mollusk in a shell, a closed shell. When you oyster against stress, you stay here and nobody notices you’re oystering. You now just contemplate bullshit like a wise koala in its tree, maybe even smiling inside…

There are subtleties in the way we can oyster.

  • We can tent, the famous “instant tent”. You just need half a second to instant tent. Hop and vroush, here you are.
  • We can spider: in a hole we hide, there’s nothing more than a string that connects you with reality.
  • We can ice, too: immobility of the mind.
  • We can tree, wise and vast and upstairing, talking to birds and clouds and the sun, solid on roots…

What do you choose? Where (Work? Couple? Parents?)? Is it effective? How long?

You take a break at work : quiet or yelling laughing?

Meeting games : quiet and watching or screaming answers to win a cap?

Historians, in the future, will talk about our time as the “Displacement Compulsion Epoch”.

Some of the “greatest” things today are linked to displacement : traveling, having a car, and many leisure activities are displacements (jogging, biking, trekking).

Did our grand-fathers jog?

Resistance to change is a well documented management problem.

There are books and web pages about “How to deal with resistance to change”! People fight, find reasons to refuse, explain why it “won’t work”, they hide doing old procedures, “it was better before”, etc. Well, that’s resistance!

The solutions to overcome this are always the same : to get people involved, to change in little steps, to train people, etc.

What is funny is when the change was stupid, and a failure, when the staff was right to resist.

I’m more interested, for sure, in “Sabotage in Reverse” : how to work well against your hierarchy when they’re wrong.

Music is a pleasure of life, and it’s useful too. There are musics “for”.

  • Music which can give birth to images. Imaginary landscapes or anything. Images.
  • Music decor
  • Challenging musics : you don’t understand. You need explanations. Or books. Exploration.
  • Music can help you to work, to focus, to give brain energy.
  • Dancing in your house.
  • Musics for remembrance. Memories.

Pasternakisation

Communism in USSR : 1917 to 1991. It’s a long time for no-freedom! In these times, a single sentence could send you in Siberia for decades!

Many artists ran away, or became dissidents. There’s a wiki about them : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_dissidents

Where I found that their possible paths were : “Exile, the mental hospital, or the labor camp”.

One safer way to resist, used by the people, was jokes and sarcasms. There are entire books of these! Talking, with persons well known, in kitchens, was the only way to express…

Today let’s talk about one Russian author : Pasternak, who, like Shostakovich, stayed in the country. Many others had to run away (Prokofiev, though he returned to Russia, Stravinsky, Nabokov).

There’s a study to make : How to stay under terrible political pressure and survive?

  • Offer nothing to grip. Pasternak translated classical authors in Russian for years.
  • Show your disagreement, but not enough to get shot.
  • Disappear into nothingness, get yourself unnoticed.
  • Hide.
  • Get so famous that you become almost untouchable. Then you can act strongly… or more risky.

Pasternak wrote Doctor Zhivago and got it published in Italy (after USSR rejection), and got the Nobel Prize. He had to reject it but the international impact was huge…

I’m interested by this attitude, between escape/evasion and staying/death.

How to stand up, dangerous maybe but not enough to get killed. How to resist invisibly. How to have an impact, without getting arrested for it?

Oma Maa & Absurd Rules

I’m listening to Oma Maa, Op 92, a great cantata written by Sibelius. These choir & colors!

Now I think about Holst (very similar music with choir), about Northern countries (Finland, Norway, Sweden) and the lands…

I talked today about Baudelaire with my daughter. He is probably our best French poet ever. And an enemy of classicism, because of… all the rules involved. Invention needs to break some rules, right? I remember my Philosophy degree exam : “Is it a progress to not believe?”.

I’m reading a book called Absurd Decisions III : Hell of Rules.

And it’s hilarious! They asked people working in a company, in North of Europa, about… Rules in the company.

  • 3% often use the books of rules
  • 50% never use them
  • 47% judges the rules unrealizable
  • 29% think the rules are there to punish them in case of problem
  • 95% think that if the rules were respected the work would never been done in time
  • 79% think that there are too many rules
  • 70% judge that they are too complicated
  • 77% think they are sometimes contradictory

Normative Perversion…

Ignorance of capacities, invention, intelligence, adaptation, life, movement…

Management out of reality, cut from people, illusion of knowledge, lured by digits…

Are you a rules-follower? Worse : Are you a rules-inventor? OK : what do you have to do now? A survey?

Lie Lowing & Sliding out of assignations…

Ahhhh I like this Deleuzian pattern. Here it is :

ONE

I have a friend who is always very angry towards the world, how people act, how they entertain, against politics and laws and books. He has a big radar for bullshit.

Most of the time I agree! But I go back to this Tolstoyian question : “Que faire ?”. What do you do? What should you do?

The paths of actions here are numerous : rage, denunciation, analysis, destruction, symbolic acts, militancy or policital career. You go girl! Change the world!

TWO

Against bad management I hear friends who fight back with huge strength, lawyers and big energy. Their colleagues scream : “You make a rod for your own back!” (or else they crash down. Tears or depression. It is a way out!). They can… Pyrrhicly win!

THREE

The Type we watch here is the Offensive Resistance Fighter.

What counts for them? FACTS. Action.

FOUR

In war time, in front of the Nazis occupiers, these people wouldn’t have last an afternoon. The Big Rule for resistance is to lie low.

I love that in English “to lie” means “not tell the truth” but also “to recline”, to be on the ground, hiding, undiscovered. Se faire oublier, we way in French : To make yourself forgotten…

FIVE

Invent your (inner or not) clandestine world, dig burrows (with many entrances), shape your camouflages, fool the chieves and the idiots.

Sliding out of assignations, because you become a nomad, killing obedient roles and solid-frozen “identities” (labels). Leaking. Being between, and moving all the time. Find what you have to do, and do it. Including : loom strongly from nowhere and hit – or disorient. That’s funny!

Don’t expect to meet friends in this forest, Waldgänger. But you will, eventually.

Fight Club vs Le Bon Bock – Rebellions

Hi everyone! You know me and my tendency to find common structures in things.

Yesterday I was reading about Le Bon Bock (1873), a painting (now in Philadelphia) by E. Manet, which was a big success after the dramatic events in Paris (the Paris Commune, 1871, see here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Commune). It’s been seen as a Type, a sort of philosopher, happy to be quiet, thinking, having a pipe and a good beer.

Then I got questions from my daughter about the Fight Club movie (1999), a huge source of disagreements at the time. I made a web page (in French : https://www.maison-page.net/FC.html), my theory was that the film was a way to dismiss, back to back these two attitudes :

  1. Being a stupid “capitalist consumer” happy donkey, the unthinking bored dork whose motto is : “Buy things, obey the rules and shut up”.
  2. Being a dumb nihilist : the excessive-behaviored “useless anarchist” who needs the system (because he wants to “change” it).

What’s the point?

Well, for me, both (the painting/the movie), each in its era, says the same thing implicitly.

Manet painted a guy who is refractory to any form of domination – showing a way out of the boring back-to-back Fight Club criticism. The world is maybe absurd, but there’s a third path, out of the opposition : dumb consumer/dumb rebel.

Waldgänger uses the forest is an article where I explained what is this “Forest Goer” : you stay in the world, but you don’t believe in its bullshit anymore. You step aside… inside your mind. You don’t “quit”, you don’t rebel : you watch and don’t believe in what to see.

Inner retreat. You need it sometimes!…

Organizing Withdrawal

In my 22th Chronicle I talked about Pasolini and Didi-Huberman (an Italian director and a French philosopher), about the fireflies – the persons who, in dark times, arrange, create, install glimmers, little lights.

It’s about resistance : it’s discreet, humble, unnoticed by the majority (who run on highways, into the big neon lights of consumerism & productivity). Fireflies. They’re in the woods, along small paths and trails…

Fireflies disappear maybe because we don’t know how to see them anymore, say philosophers, but, well, obviously, they really disappear…

Maybe there’s a way to “organize the retreat”?

In military vocabulary, a withdrawal is a “type of military operation, generally meaning retreating forces back while maintaining contact with the enemy” (wiki). There’s something included in this : it must be organized, held, kept in order, “in contact with the enemy”. If you lose this idea, it’s rout.

I should find a book about this concept! Retreating seems a negative thing, but we are here on a field where we have to find the positive aspects. Military speaking, I found this list here about withdrawal – https://www.virtuescience.com/why-retreat.html :

  • To pretend weakness
  • To make time to observe enemy
  • To make time to recover
  • To make time to plan
  • To lead enemy to more favourable area
  • To evade attack
  • To lessen force of enemy blow
  • To delay battle to a more favourable time
  • To defuse conflict
  • To wear out opponent

When I was in my Napoléon time, I was fascinated by Ney, Marshal of the Empire. In Russia he commanded the “rearguard”. Interesting to study, if you fancy it…

What about fireflies?

Glow-worms’ signals are intermittent and fine, minuscule, fragile. The tiny is the place of resistance. A singularity which also could make the forgotten… intelligible again. A firefly as an example?

Organizing the retreat is to BE a firefly, or to help them, maybe also to show those who whistle there are no more fireflies that they are wrong. It’s about “something is staying”. They glow in darkness. If you don’t see them anymore, it’s because you don’t want to follow their signals…

But I’m sure you do see them. I’m sure you’re one of them…

When, when you’re in the Crowd, do you step aside to glow-resist? When you meditate? When you create? When you throw an invisimagical moment? When you do “a little of the contrary”? When you have some unexpected two seconds behavior? When you show a thing of beauty? When you don’t follow, you disobey? When you…

What to Do With Stupid Orders – Que faire face aux ordres stupides ?

OK I’m french. My english is a frenglish, it’s rusty and wobbly, et voilà. Try me, though. I’ll do my best. I promise. If sometimes it’s too bad, just laugh at me or roll you eyes.

If you evolve within une hiérarchie, you have probably at some point faced… stupid orders. What can we do against stupid orders ? We can think, but we can also act.

Of course, we can choose to secrete some of the stress caused by stupid orders into our heads and that’s OK ! Try doing this for a while though and you’ll most likely stop, because you’ll find it’s useless.

Stupid orders make us think.

Maybe we first have to realize that our managers KNOW his or her instructions are dumb, useless, or counter-productive because after all this game of hierarchy is a matter of masks. At points, it can even become humorous to think that maybe the manager is hiding his own embarrassment when he asks us do – that. Donnez-lui un coup de coude (en pensée).

On the mood-dial of our brains, the needle can go from complete zenitudness (you don’t care about the consequences of disobeying stupid orders – you’re the Zen Master) to complete madness and murderous wishes. Alas, in the hierarchic work world, whatever you “think” can become completely useless. So what happens when your tired skull is fighting responsibility?

We play with this, manage it, compress it, try to understand it, and document it… it’s all ours. Maybe you are great at being able to detect stupid orders, however you prefer not to think about it. So then what do you do with the entire keyboard of options in front of you?

1. You can fight and say NO (aaaand… you’re fired. Goodbye).

2. You can try to explain to your manager (or to his own manager if you like danger) why the order is sooo stupid.

3. You can disobey and hide your “good work”.

4. You can just shut up and do the thing (muttering and mumbling in you beard if need be).

5. Discrete resistance is also an option. For example:  Sabotage.  Slowing the process.  Killing the branches of stupidity in silence and hiding your effort to make these stupid orders a partial or complete failure (however this could lead to betrayal by colleagues and your activity might be detected.)

Tools:

It can be useful to try various types of dissonance in an effort to develop your stance.

Inner Exile can be perfect at times. You are simply not there. You hide like a spider in a hole, linked by a casual thread.

Disguised Acceptation is cool too.  You merely say yes (and smile if you want), but you follow your own path.

At the most you’ll be found guilty of being a free electron. So there!
