To consider the world like something to decipher

“To consider the world like something to decipher”, says Gilles Deleuze, “to be mindful to signs is a gift”.

Decipher is a splendid word, right? What’s the engine?

  • We are structuralists (we find some knowledge on systematic structures)
  • We are phenomenologists (we find some knowledge on pure experience)

Hey, maybe we’re post-structuralists (doesn’t that sound good?)!

Here’s Wikipedia :

A post-structuralist approach argues that to understand an object (e.g., a text), it is necessary to study both the object itself and the systems of knowledge that produced the object.

So when we watch a person, an object, a text, as we globally function with analogies, we seek structures, skeletons inside. And then we watch something else…

Therefore if a new teacher enters the room, we quickly seek, we try to decipher if he’s a Type (an Archetype?) – is he a Boss, a Preacher, a Guide? Are his ways chaotic, structured? What’s his pace?

We seek structures, but also we notice. What do we notice? Signs.

What do we expect? What is disappointment, here? How do we offset against disappointment?

Proust says he has a burden : for him, things (persons, events, anything) HAVE TO recall him something else – or have to make him imagine something else.

Let’s call it the addiction of links.

All this, because we seek. We need to decipher.

Effort of the will is not enough – Deleuze mentions “Those truths of the intelligence that lack the claw of necessity”.

What do you think?

Cutlery Test & Clean New Suburbs

I moved house, and laughed with one of the movers. He said that you can say a lot about someone according to the way the cardboard boxes are sealed.

Pattern : this summer, in a few houses, I watched the way the cutlery was placed on each side of the plates.

I’m a constructivist, therefore : as I know people need forks and knives and spoons near their plate, I effing don’t care if there are “rules” for where I put cutlery.

In the contrary : if your boxes are a mess, there will be moved as well – there are no rules here. But beware of what you’ll find at the end !

I could name this article “the constructivists”. We are people who construct (decide) of many aspects of reality. Call us the pragmatics, or the practical, or rules questioners/deciders : as soon as the cutlery is “there”, you don’t have to follow cutlery “rules”.

We have here an interesting language thing between French and English. The world “Acquis”, in French (the past participle of “Acquérir”, but also and adjective and a noun), is the same for MANY of your English words, who are nested, layered :

  • Benefit, asset, knowledge, gain, laurels, acknowledged, assured, recognized, won over to, as read, established…

The question dancing around is this one : what is assured and established… and shouldn’t be? Can we examine “rules” of life, and decide it’s useless, or more : stupid?

Cardboard boxes well sealed are perfect : they don’t crash themselves in the truck. Perfectly aligned cutlery is great if you have 4 forks and 7 knives and 5 spoons (boring dinner), but not for family snacks. And do we absolutely have to iron the bed sheets?

What do we “HAVE TO” do that we… don’t have to do?
What do we “HAVE TO” do that we… should do?

Should I become a rules questioner today? Where? Why?

Perfection seeking, the absolutely followed rules, the straight lines everywhere, what do they say about him, her, you, them?

Is it a progress not to believe?

Why is it such a pleasure so see cracks in the concrete, or little grasshoppers, or two daisies fighting for their way near the white perfect walls of clean suburbs like this one?

Will nature win always?

(yes she will)

Have a nice day!

Signs of Bad Signs II : Movies, etc

One day I heard an interview of F. Luchini, a French actor, who explained that in the beginning of a love story, he gave a rendez-vous with his lover in Paris, in a street, in front of a theater, and when he saw her coming, she was wearing an ugly scarf, so ugly it became comme un caillou dans sa chaussure, like a stone in his shoe : for the rest of the day he couldn’t really focus, and in the end… he knew this relationship would be impossible.

I found it pretty rude – everybody makes mistakes (like wearing anything cheetah for women or like sandals & socks for men). But it was probably a good symbol for what happens – with more subtleties – in all beginnings.

In love stories : bad faith (“I’ve never said that!”), playing the victim, not really listening, lies, a will to change you, greed, constant gossips, wearthercocking, etc… It’s an interesting field to study – including our ways of being blind in front of it!

Signs of Bad Signs : our shades of narcissism

A few days ago I watched Mary and the Witch’s Flower, a Japanese animated movie, the first one from a new studio (founded by guys from Ghibli). I was pretty happy to watch it, and then… bad signs, in a row :

  • The first one is the script. Here you are with characters you don’t really care about, in a story you constantly want to sigh about.
  • The second one is : they stole everything they could from the Master (Miyazaki) : a redhead character (Ponyo), a girl/witch with a broom and a cat (Kiki), a way to watch nature, a weird old principal (Chihiro), etc. Add the “school for wizards” and a mark in her hands (not on her forehead, haha), and you sigh more and more.
  • The third one is very small, and it’s been the worse : useless pressing dialog. For example : In the night, Mary is in her room. She hears a strange noise outside. She turns her head towards the window, and says “What’s that strange noise?”. PFFFF sorry if I roll my eyes but not sorry. Miyazaki would have never allowed that. Show, don’t tell, silly!

Bad signs are signs you have to stop the movie you’re watching. It’s your instinct and your experience talking to you. Therefore I did stop the movie.

And then all the questions about bad signs :

  • Can we sort them in categories?
  • Is it unfair? Can we be wrong?
  • After a first bad sign do we switch on our alert probes? To check & detect more?
  • Can we be lured? On purpose? Bad signs as manipulation?
  • Do we disguise “it’s to difficult for me” into bad signs?
  • What is it “to insist despite of bad signs”?
  • When does our brain stay blind?
  • Bad signs in a love affair, in fandom, in business, in a job interview?
  • Resistance to change?
  • Detection : instinct or intelligence?
  • What if you’re prisoner with bad signs around?
  • Something bad… but no bad signs at all. What the?

Hmmm… are there real, unfailing, solid bad signs? Like, well, sandals & socks?

OK, THAT is impossible, right?

The Castaway Syndrome

At some moments in your life, you really have the feeling that you’re “helped”. By whom, well, you will never know, silly!

If you want to spend time to figure it out, you’ll find books about that : God, your Angel, Quantum Mechanics or The Universe (please add Capitals everywhere, this is important).

For me, it’s useless to try to guess, because you will never know. Use all of it, though! Coincidences and signs, good intuitions, instinct, speed, meeting the right persons at the perfect time, this is all magic and a source of joy and amazement. Dance with them, c’est la vie !

But.

Irony of life is very powerful too. You meet the right person, but at the wrong moment. You encounter failure and betrayal, craziness, slowing downs or closed doors. Everything seems to brake. You make bad choices, you’re wrong. You probably expected too much, or in the wrong way, and life begins to slap your face and hit your skull, ouchy! Coincidences are stupidly useless, signs become dirty fuchsia feathers in a gutter.

Okeyyy so what? Your exhibition is a mess, your published book has no success at all, your future wife chose another guy, your startup starts to go down, c’est la merde, oui ?

“Time to move forward” and “Keep smiling” and “You build your own Happiness” don’t work for the moment. Try, and you’ll feel (and look) ridiculous. Insisting is wrong. Curiously, everybody “needs space” around you. And in space, nobody can hear you scream!

It’s time to wait, to park, to rest, to think. Shipwrecked, sailor! Castaway!

Find a corner. Narrow your goals. Regroup. Think without overthink. Put some puzzle pieces. Find your peace. Or scream, OK, but inside your belly. Real screams annoys everyone…

OK, in your car, on the highway : SCREAM!

Then, also, do something unusual.

Thanks for reading!

#Signs & #Coincidences? Are you serious? #Jung

Bonjour !

As a bookseller I often have to deal with people who struggle with sudden elements, in their life, which force them to think “out of the box”, out of their usual normal mind frontiers…

You are sometimes pushed out of schedules and happy life by really strange sh*t. It can be an accident, a dream, a coincidence.

These kind of events have an effect. It’s like a hand pushing on your chest, saying : “Stop! Look! Think!”.

“Are you serious? Do you think I live in a movie?”. Of course not… We are serious people, aren’t we?

Carl Gustav Jung told the story of two women having tea, talking about a third friend they did not see since ten years. At this moment, the phone rings : it’s her (evidently). Jung says he absolutely doesn’t care about “how it works” : he is interested by the SURPRISE of the ladies. They are floored in a awe. This is interesting.

If you dream of an earthquake which happens for real two days after. If a knife-rest stands up after it fell on the ground and you got a phonecall two seconds later saying your son just broke his leg. If you both friends text each other the exact same combination of emojis at the same second. Your mouth stays open for a moment (close it or you could swallow a fly). You smile, too. Something’s happening, right?

Searching the cause, from Norwegian angels taking care of you to Magic Intention of the Universe, from quantum physics to local Gods, is a lack of time. Useless. It happened, what will you make of it? THAT is important.

I stay and stand with Jung. Anything that looks like a sign, a coincidence, anything that stops my brain like that, makes me decide that I have to think, reconsider, change, watch, examine.

It’s like I Ching : there’s probably no magic here. It’s your choice to make the most of it. Stop, think : “What does that mean?”. We often are like hamsters in a wheel, we roll and roll. These coincidences are opportunities to jump out of the wheel. Stop. Think.

If a “sign” helps you, just say thanks. To… I dunno! And turn the steering wheel.

Bonne journée !
