la photographie not good

Back home today with my Canon G9X, from the train station through a little park I love, I took pictures and I posted a few here.

Here is an exercise. I chose 9 failed pictures. What I noticed is when a photography is not good, you can do what you want : change colors, reframe like this or like that, it will always LACK something :

  1. For picture 1 I was sure to make something interesting, because of the quiet work site : the blocks/pipes layout, the noony harsh light. I didn’t manage to “resolve” it. I should have come in the evening, maybe. Or climb somewhere.
  2. The E.T. block on picture 2 was funny, but it cut the girl’s legs for no reason, and the “sense” of the image is just nonexistant. I reframed it like a fool until I saw there was nothing to do about it.
  3. I love picture 3 because it’s a reflection, you can feel the warm city mood, I managed to underexpose it the good way and the picture has a good structure, framed by shadows. But well well well : it’s blurry, and this is not Alex Webb, right?
  4. The bridges in picture 4 are great, the light is good, the guy is luckily in the sun and the tulips are just perfect on the right. Nevertheless it’s not good. Too far. Too flat.
  5. The guy with the trumpet on picture 5 was funny to watch (and to hear with is ducky wrong notes). I asked him for a picture after this one but I failed to take any good pics. This one is wrong : the trash, the light, the background.
  6. Picture 6 is like “yeah yeah yeah humans and architecture”. Could have been good but it’s not but I don’t know what to do here.
  7. Picture 7 lacks a kid or two, that’s all.
  8. Picture 8 is like too easy, right? Contrasts, underexposition, verticality. To “eighties Rayban ad”, oui? Nope.
  9. Picture 9 is the “OK but so what?” type. I was lucky with the blue (sky, car, shorts), that’s it. Pff.

Dexterous Swinging Between Two Properties

…du balancement adroit de ces deux propriétés…
…of the dexterous swinging between these two properties…

I found this great tool, this “pattern” in a Paul Valéry‘s notebook. He was a poet and a philosopher and was, here, thinking about the process of consciousness.

(I won’t translate it here, but let’s say he talks about the swinging between consciousness and unconsciousness, the first one as an engine to drive the production of the other one).

If you’re a psychoanalyst, it’s interesting, you’ll try to link this with Freud’s theories, etc. But with my cheap structuralist mind, I operate on it – to extract its minitool :

dexterous swinging between these two properties

Swinging means you go from one thing to the other one, and vice-versa. Dexterous means you know your doubletool, you are a pilot of it. You just have to find the field where to use this.

  • Reason and Instinct?
  • Skills and Attempts?
  • Talking and Listening?
  • Passion and Casualness?
  • Fast and Slow?
  • Following orders (or rules) and Following your mind?
  • Control and Let go?
  • Fight and Flee?

 

Find other examples. You have now your two “aspects”.

Then think about a “dexterous swinging” between the two.

Then, apply your wooden tool to your field : photographer, poet, soldier, writer, blogger, designer, architect, gardener, who knows… What do you find?

You are GOOD in playing your TWO FACETS. What does that mean? How do you play that? Can you teach it? How do you think it? Can you apply your method to other fields?

Those who type “fast” with two fingers hahaha #dactylo #writing

In France like in many countries, people use computers all the time, at work and at home. But you will barely find one human being who learned how to type. It’s not even deliberate, they just don’t think about it, voilà!

When I was about 25, I bought a little app on my Macintosh Plus and I worked like half an hour, daily. It’s been a little painful (no lesson could be climbed until I got a certain ration mistakes/speed), but after two months I was able to use all my fingers without looking at them.

Yeaaah I’m always a little proud when I see the jaw of a “I type fast I’m a geek” colleague who watches me writing an email three times faster, without quitting my bond eye/screen, “How do you do that?”.

They think I am fast, voilà. Of course I am, that’s the point : 10 fingers against 2! But…

It’s difficult to tell them that typing gives you a much more important power :

As you don’t have to continuously watch your fingers, as you see the text unfolding on the screen, it’s as if your brain was connected to the letters’ appearance. You go fast (there is no more “finger interface” : your hands work alone as they don’t need control from you, it’s a dance they do, like your feet when you walk) PLUS you pour your ideas into letters.

No, it’s impossible to tell them. Jaw up, Joe. It’s not that hard.
